The Los Angeles chapter of the Institute for International Film Financing (IIFF) continues its popular monthly gatherings at the junction of film & finance with a special Film Financing Townhall at the renowned Columbia College. Their facilities are conveniently located just off Melrose Avenue in Hollywood.

This grassroots community get-together is designed to foster & inform productive relationships between attendees. It provides unbiased insight & education about the business of film and film financing in particular. The event features a powerful roster of highly topical speakers from the filmmaking and financial industries. We are delighted to welcome real-world financiers among our guests!

The evening's five presentations plus panel discussion address key issues relevant to filmmakers, financiers and anyone interested in the economics, business mechanics, and financial dynamics of motion pictures. Our Host

This month's Film Financing Townhall in Los Angeles is hosted by the esteemed Columbia College, whose five-week "Semester in L.A." immersion program takes place in Hollywood. With more than 120 programs of study and nearly 12,000 students, Columbia College Chicago is the largest and most diverse private arts and media college in the United States. Occupying 22 buildings in the heart of Chicago's South Loop, Columbia nurtures the nation's largest concentration of young creative talent. In addition to a solid academic foundation, students gain real-world experience through internships and part-time jobs in one of America's most dynamic and vibrant cities.

Very special thanks for making this event possible go to Jon Katzman, the Executive Director of Columbia's Semester in L.A.. The program offers select students highly intensive coursework, helps them rise to the top of an extremely competitive market, and provides a rare opportunity to experience the business of Hollywood first hand on a studio lot with industry professionals. Classes are held at the historic Raleigh Studios complex, Hollywood's oldest and longest continually-operated movie studio. Many graduates have gone on to work in production offices, on TV shows, at talent agencies and on film sets.

Barry Richards

Speaker headshot 1 Barry Richards spent the last 25 years in the corporate arena of investments. His career spans over three decades in both the business and creative worlds. He began his career in music as a singer/songwriter; his international success has garnered him many gold and platinum records, which have sold in the millions. On the film financing side, Mr. Richards was involved --through some investment groups-- in the financial raise of the Walt Disney/Silver Screen Partners slate funding. In 2000, he worked for Alpine Pictures for four years, helping finance a number of their feature films. In the last few years, he focused on developing relationships with production companies, studios, financial institutions, hedge funds and films funds to facilitate and package features for indie producers and directors. Mr. Richards currently serves as Senior Vice President of Uprising Entertainment. »

Louise Levison

Alex Rotaru

Speaker headshot 3 Alex Rotaru attended the University of Southern California's School of Cinematic Arts and earned a Master of Fine Arts degree in Film/TV Production. Since graduation, he has worked in script development, then in documentaries, directing several award-winning docs, including the New York Times Critic's Pick "They Came to Play" and "Kids with Cameras," chosen by the US State Department to be part of its American Documentary Showcase in countries all over the world. Mr. Rotaru's most recent project "Shakespeare High," a feature documentary executive produced by Kevin Spacey and starring Spacey, Richard Dreyfuss, Mare Winningham and Val Kilmer, is about teens improving their lives through theater and has just premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival. He is prepping to direct his first narrative feature this summer, "The End of Rain," winner of the Romanian CNC screenplay & financing competition. The recipient of a Christopher Award for PBS POV's "The Hobart Shakespeareans," Mr. Rotaru lives in Beverly Hills, California. »

Harrison Freed

Speaker headshot 4 Harrison Freed has been in the film business for over thirty years. He has transitioned from grip and gaffer work, to casting, and now to producing. Mr. Freed's past background in casting has helped him come up with the right talent for a variety of projects. He has also appeared as an actor in a New York City Theatre Row original play (which he also wrote), "Destination Unknown," directed by Silvana Vienne; he also started and ran with Silvana an improv company called "The Boomtown Players", which appeared at comedy clubs all over Manhattan. Mr. Freed attained his BA in Liberal Studies at American University in DC. His main concentration was politics and economics. He understands the importance of tax credits and other forms of financing (e.g., foreign pre-sales) that can be used as recoupment for film productions. »

Jean Scoccimarro

Speaker headshot 5 Jean Scoccimarro has been working as a Casting Director in LA since 1984. She started with the TV series "Tales From the Darkside," produced by horror legend George Romero. Her biggest discovery occurred in the early 90s, when she found Angelina Jolie (who had just turned 17) through her acting teacher at the Lee Strassberg Institute. Ms. Scoccimarro has worked on indie films and television in LA (and some in NY) for many years. She is currently finishing the casting on the indie low-budget horror thriller for Greg Avellone (Kevin Costner's VP of Tig Productions), who is directing and producing. In TV, she worked for Robert Zemeckis, Jerry Bruckheimer, Joel Silver, John Gray, Russel Mulcahy, Armand Mastroianni and others. In features, she was one of the Casting Directors on Peter Jackson's first American film. Ms. Scoccimarro loves the indies and has cast everything from Movies of the Week, pilots, series, films of all budgets, Public Service Announcements, webisodes, commercials, etc. »

Brad Littlefield

Speaker headshot 10 Brad Littlefield has worked with successful high technology startups in California, as well as in film production and television. In 2008, he co-founded DAP Studios, and in 2009, he produced his first feature film, "Becoming Eduardo" (Seth Adkins, A Martinez, Elizabeth Pena), which was shot in New Mexico. "Becoming Eduardo" recently won Best Latino Film 2009 at the Santa Fe Film Festival, along with the prestigious New Mexico Filmmaker Award. It was recognized as Best New Mexican Film and Audience Choice at the 2010 White Sands International Film Festival. Brad's entertainment experience includes talent and casting for MTV Networks and project management for YouTube. He is currently working with Open Range Pictures on the feature films "Traveling Salesmen" and "Desert Water," and with Remote Films on "The Devil of Appalachia." His interest in public service has led to active participation with many non-profit organizations including The Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Center's Legal Services Department, The San Mateo County Center for Domestic Violence Prevention and Performing Arts Studio West. Brad is a Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Signatory Producer and member of the American Film Institute (AFI). »

Thomas Trenker

IIFF logo The Institute for International Film Financing (IIFF) is an independent grassroots organization equally dedicated to serving the needs of filmmakers & financiers. IIFF's one-of-a-kind mission is to sustainably expand the scope & appeal of film financing and do so for the benefit of the public at large.

True to our proven motto of "democratizing film finance," IIFF's frequent Townhall Meetings bring together a wide array of professionals from relevant backgrounds in film, finance and beyond for a vibrant evening of insightful presentations, inspiring discussion & focused networking. Past meetings have reliably delivered useful insights into the business of film, provided valuable networking opportunities and drawn large, enthusiastic crowds.

IIFF has active chapters in multiple cites, and we are looking to expand further to better serve filmmakers and financiers everywhere. Help start or run a local chapter in your area! We make it easy and worth your while. Take a first step and tell us about yourself.
